Hepcidin is as the key iron regulatory-hormone subject of many scientific studies and quickly gaining interest as disease biomarker and target for novel pharmaceuticals. We offer quantitative hepcidin measurements by time-of-flight mass spectrometry on a fee per sample basis.

Hepcidin measurements are routinely performed by weak cation exchange chromatography followed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry on a Microflex LT MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer from Bruker Daltonics.

Know-how, expertise available

We were the first to employ time-of-flight mass spectrometry to measure hepcidin in urine. Since then, we have continued to improve this assay towards a current quantitative assay to measure hepcidin in human serum/plasma and urine samples using an internal standard for quantification. We have gained thorough expertise on biomedical and pre-analytical factors that influence hepcidin levels in clinical and biological samples and our assay has been used in numerous biomedical studies.

We coordinate the harmonization of hepcidin methods that are currently in use throughout the world and have determined reference values for hepcidin in the general population. We offer three kind of services

1) Patient Care: hepcidin tests (human serum or plasma) can be order directly through our webform.

2) Clinical trials: we provide "fit-to-purpose" assay validation and subsequent analysis of hepcidin in samples from (pre-)clinical trials.

3) Collaborative projects: we assist in the development/validation of new assays and offer hepcidin measurements at a reduced fee if the focus of a project is on gaining new insights in iron metabolism and will lead to joint publications.

Our service for clinical trials and patient care complies with both GCP regulations and with the accreditation criteria for medical laboratories as laid down in the EN/ISO 15189 and specified in the Dutch CCKL Code of practice for the implementation of a quality system. The accreditation covers the professional competence of the laboratory staff, the quality system of the laboratory as well as the specified activities and disciplines as described in the authorized annex bearing the accreditation number. We are currently working towards the NEN-EN-ISO-15189 accreditation of the Dutch Council of Accreditation.

Our flexible approach also allows hepcidin measurements in other human body fluids, growth medium from in vitro cultured human cell lines and body fluids from different animals. We have established qualitative assays for hepcidin peptides in mouse serum (Hep-1), mouse urine (Hep-2), rat urine, monkey plasma, and pig plasma.

Possibilities of partnership

Hepcidinanalysis.com has been involved in many scientific studies, which has already resulted in more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals. We are currently one of the partners of the EU consortium EUROCALIN that aims to develop an novel treatment for anemia based on an hepcidin-binding Anticalin. This consortium is coordinator by the company Pieris that contributes key intellectual property for the Anticalin technology. Within this consortium, we are responsible for the development of analytical assays that measure free/drug-bound hepcidin as biomarkers for target engagement in animal models and humans.
